It is with a very heavy heart that I must tell you that our friend and co-worker, our dental hygienist, Karen Prestien, passed away on January 3, 2017.
Karen was a Star. She had been with our office since August of 1994—she was the first person I hired when I started here. Of all the applicants for her position, she stood out with her straightforward approach to the interview process and her knowledge and responsible personality. She was always conscientious, and courteous, and she performed her dental hygiene duties with skill, honesty and integrity.
So many times throughout her career here, I would be working with a patient in my operatory, and we would hear Karen and her patient laughing—not just a quiet giggle. I mean loud, belly laughing! I would often remark that I didn’t know that someone could have that much fun in a dental office.
And no story about Karen is complete without mentioning her love for her cats and stray animals. She had such a fond spot for them.
Though she would tell you that she “didn’t like change,” she was always interested in learning new dental techniques and protocols. She was often the first person in the office in the morning, and so often helped out when another co-worker needed a hand later in the day. And we knew when Karen got to the Pandora radio first and needed her disco fix—Bee Gees, Abba, and Donna Summer to the rescue.
Karen’s recent medical ailments were extremely difficult for her. She continued to work even when many of us would have called off. She loved to work and see her “friends”—as you were always more to her than just a “patient.” We will miss her so very, very much, and I am sure many of you will too. If you would like to, you may write a note to her family and I will see that they get it. Karen was a Star in our office, and I am sure we will continue to see her light shining for a long, long time.
